Turmeric. This magical golden root is popping up everywhere lately. Its earthy scent, mild peppery taste, and vibrant gold color make it hard to miss but its health benefits are what make it out of this world. It's been a staple in Ayurvedic medicine and Indian cuisine thanks to its powerful healing properties. And when I say powerful, oh baby, do I mean powerful.

Turmeric is most commonly used as a wonderful way to manage and fight chronic inflammation, something far too many of us struggle with. Turmeric contains bioactive compounds called curcuminoids, the most powerful being curcumin. Curcumin is an insanely powerful antioxidant, giving it its anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, research on curcumin has shown it to be antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-tumor, and a great detox for your liver. The most exciting benefit to this superfood though may just be the fact that research has shown it to be successful in treating cancer. If that isn't reason enough to use this baby on the daily, then I don't know what is!

Incorporating turmeric into your diet is simple and extremely affordable. Start by making your own three ingredient turmeric paste for an easy go-to. It's also important to know that When combined with black pepper, turmeric allows your body to absorb the healing properties of curcumin by 2000%.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup filtered water

1/4 cup turmeric powder

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

Start by bringing the water to a boil in a saucepan. Add turmeric and black pepper and simmer on a medium heat, stirring often, until a paste forms. Once cooled you can store this goodness in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Incorporate this paste daily with gently warmed almond milk for a caffeine free latte, with warm water and ginger for a nourishing tea, or add a spoonful to your morning green smoothie. The turmeric will still provide a boost in energy and your metabolism so it makes for a wonderful alternative to coffee. You can lightly sweeten your tea or latte with raw honey, cinnamon, and lemon to balance out the peppery taste if your buds need to be eased into it.

However you do it, get this golden root in everyday and make turmeric your new bestie!
